REFLECTION 6

Hi all,

To start of the day,there's a EIR TEST! Since it is a E.I.R (effective internet research), we had a test online blackboard. Well, out of 20 questions, I managed to hit the borderline! "just NIce ah!" Through the test today,  I realize that I am unclear of  the topic on the invisible web. For that, I will look through the lecture notes again.   

Now, I shall put the Test matter aside and move on to the exciting part of the DAY!

The lesson is very interesting and interactive!! "Just talk cock ah!"
The talking cock site (www.talkingcock.com) is indeed the typical Singapore language. Especially singlish dictionary. I have discovered new singlish language besides the typical lor, la, lo, hor. Talking cock site has achieved its purpose of talking cock and entertainment. It has lighten up the class with laughter and jokes. When we laughed at the site, we are actually laughing at ourselves. It is a reflection of us, Singaporean. In fact, once in awhile, laughing at ourselves is not a bad thing. hahaha... Just love the way Singaporean are! Uniquely US!

Beside all that, we were divided into 3 groups. My group was a role of foreigner worker. Each of the group sent a representative to share their point of views. During the sharing session, our class gave a little surprise to the birthday boy, YONG WEI! We gave him a surprise Birthday song immediately after his point of view of foreigner worker.

Back to topic, how would I react to this website if you were a foreigner worker? My answer is: If I were a foreigner worker, my mouth will open widely upon seeing the website. I couldn’t believe Singapore is so open and easy about own country. Is it true about Singapore? However on the other sides, it entertains me. There is interesting fact about Singapore. The singlish language is very unique in a way.

The criteria I have used are, purpose, coverage, accuracy, curreny. I feel that this four criteria is the best to evaluate the talking.com.

• Purpose – entertainment. Purposes achieved as it indeed talking cock.
• Coverage- Subject area: Singapore. Type of material: text and video format. Coverage: very brief. Time: no limitation. Link: provide link.
• Accuracy- brief as there is lots of personal opinion.
• Currency- up to date entertainment 

To sum it up, I would say the lesson today is the most enjoyable of the week!

Hi all, I missed this lesson today. =.=! Due to overslept!
Well, I have to read through the lecture note myself. Basically today is about invisible web. It is another search facility. Well, I’ll read more on it. And update soon=)

E-LEARNING

Hi all! HAPPY DEEPAVALI to All!

Although today no class, we have e-learninig in the blackboard.
We discussed about how internet has enhanced our academic and social life.

For me, Internet is a global system which everyone can access to, including the elderly. Instead of going to the library to find resources, most of it can be found through internet. Its saves time and effort in research stage.
Internet has enriched me in my academic by providing more information that cannot be found in textbook. (a) Through internet research, you can get to know some interesting fact that you have not heard before.
As for my case, I am doing research on fast food and health. I have benefited for me as it creates awareness for me in choice of food. Besides enriched me in academic, it has enriched in social life.
This is where I get to interact with people around the world especially through the forum discussion (b). I get to hear different opinions of the people of the related topic I am researching on. Despite the long distance apart, internet connects us together. It allows us to exchanging knowledge and experience.

REFLECTION 4

Hi all, today is learnt about more search facilities!
I used Meta search engine and subject dictionary for my research topic. Using Meta search engine, it provided result of other search engine .Meta search engine is incredible! it should be named multi search engine! Meta engine has benefited me as it helps me to save my time from researching Google, yahoo and other search engine. Next, subject dictionary, it is a human compile system. The information is lesser. It does not give me the result that I wanted, but I will still use it for future purpose. =)

Now second part of the day, I did a site feed of blog! This is new to me! Site Feed is much wordier as it does not show the blog skin of it. It allows me to read it more comfortably and scanned through it fast without any distraction of the blog skin.

That’s all for the day again. It is kind of short for the day. I’ll keep explore more about Meta search engine and subject dictionary! It seems interesting to me!

REFLECTION 3

Hi all, let’s start off about Google.
I’m sure most of us heard and use it as search facilities. But, how well do you know about Google? Have you ever explored its advance features? Frankly speaking, I did not. As I simply type in my research topic, click Google search and Go! I did not even notice about the advance feature of its.
Thus today, when Faridah taught as about the Google advance and Google scholar, I was impressed! Google advance is a search filter. It helps me to refine our search query and guideline for more relevant search result. Its works! Beside that, Google scholar provides me many articles regarding my topic. Although some of the article is a little off my topic, I will still use it in my future research topic.

Now, I shall move on to the second part of the day, which is discussion forum. I have seen a discussion but have never involved in it. I can’t imagine I have to participate in a discussion forum. My initial feeling was anxious. There are several doubts running in my mind, such as, how should I start a discussion? What will the other think of me, especially the professional? Will they understand my English? And more. After awhile, I kept all those doubt ness aside. I begin to find forum. I have chosen this forum because it is related to food. From here, I created a post about my topic. After posting, I was eager to hear respond from the people whom I don’t know. Well, I have to wait patiently for the reply. My curiousness remains wait.

In conclusion, all the above that I have mentioned, I have to cite the sources. It is very important of all. This is to acknowledge the work done by others.

Yeah! That’s all about today! Google is indeed impressive!

RELFECTION 2 E-SHOPPING

Hi all, today the lesson is E- spree shopping!
I bet most girls like me love this part the best. Simply because it is shopping day through online! Personally, I likes shopping. But I seldom do shopping online as I preferred to feel and touch the item I want. If I do online shopping, most of the time I would end up in window shopping due to budget tight. But, I enjoy the process of browsing it.

Let’s talk about the advantages of eBay; it saves our time shopping outside and no need to squeeze with the crowds on the weekend. On the other hand, through eBay, we have to wait for a few days before we can get the item we want. That is what I feel about eBay.

REFLECTION 1

Hi all, this blog is specially created for this Cds which is E.I.R (Effective Internet Research) previously, it was U.I.R. (Using Internet as Research Tool).

On the first day, we were introduced to E.I.R. The general learning outcomes are: To use,evaluate and discuss internet resources and search facilities. E.I.R will also engages us in E-learning, E-lectures, online discussion forum, Blog and set up group wikis. Wao! There's so many fun activities lined up. And of course, I hope by the end of the 4 weeks, I will get to learn more about Effective internet research that is useful for my future purposes.

The first activities we had was online ice breaking. We were grouped in group of 6. My group consists of Kai Siong, Samir, Colin, Donson and lastly our group leader, Royston. (recommended by me). *laugh*=D. Our search topic was about celebrities. Each of us have different question. My selected question was, ‘What was Britney spear first baby name?’ With that, each of us went on to find the answer. We exchanged the answer through online. MSN! Compared to the other cds module, I guess this is the only module that allows us to use msn openly instead of secretly. 4 weeks has yet to come, I have already begin to like this EIR module! Msn allows us to communicate online just likes talking on the phone. It is an organizational site created by Microsoft. It has been upgrading from Msn messenger to Window live messenger 8.5. The second activities are to select a research topic to research on for the rest of the weeks. My initial topic that I was keen to research on was impact of drug abuse on youths. This is because I have went through a course called SANA 'Singapore Anti-Narcotics Association'. It is about drug. With that knowledge about drug abuse, I thought it would be an advantage for me to choose this topic. However, it was chosen by my fellow friend. Thus from then, I have come up with my own topic, which is the impact of child abuse. This is because I am keen to know more about child abuse. It is a very exciting topic to look on. However again I did not carry on, as this topic is too big to research within 4 weeks. (adviced by Faridah). Finally, with Faridah’s advice, I have chosen the topics regarding the impact of the proliferation of fast food chains in the world market on public health. *smile*

Personally, I love hunting for foods therefore this topic attracted me when I scanned through the list again. From here, I shall begin my journey of FAST FOOD and HEALTH with E.I.R. I have used Google to search on my topics. We are supposed to search for four internet resources; Discussion Forum; Electronic journal; WWW site; Blog. I have found each internet resources for It. As shown on the bottom of the page, this is a WWW site. It is an organizational site. Its purpose is to provide information. Yeah! It indeed provides me with information about Fast Food and this adorable picture. It may be adorable, but the meaning behind it is do not let fast food become part of you!

In conclusion, most importantly, I have learnt to identify if the website is personal or organizational and know it purpose for it. This is new to me and one thing to be proud of for the day. =)

Here’s a brief introduction of me.
I’m Ivy. My full name is Kang Kai Zing Ivy. I was a Thai baby on 260689.

Let’s start by talking about my family.
I have one elder sister, two younger sisters and one younger brother.
To sum it up, I have a big family with a total of 7 members in my house. Love it *smile*

Next, let’s talk about me
I’m 19yrs old this year. Currently, I’m pursuing in product and industrial design. (PID).
Personally, I feel that Design is to enhance and compliments a better life. I have chosen product and industrial design was due to my passion in designing a product that would add meaning to the ever changing needs and wants of the individuals. In my opinion, a good design is to be able to resolve client’s need, aesthetically-appealing and functional. This is also part of my design philosophy. With this philosophy, it severed as my guideline to design a good product.

Karim Rashid is one of my favourite designers that have influenced me. He is an industrial designer who has designed several products ranging from interiors, fashion, furniture, lighting, art and music to installations. His approach to design is functional and holistic, with an aim for the most simple, elegant shape that will effectively and ergonomically meet the requirement of an object’s purpose.

Overall, as a product and industrial designer, most must be able to conceptualize and evaluate ideas. Determine in what you can do, and do to the utmost best.

Let's move on to my hobbies.
I enjoy cycling, going to the park and enjoy the breeze, listening to music, last but no least I guess it should consider hobbies, which is eat and sleep. *smile*
